Approximately 50 per cent of plastics are used for single-use disposable applications, such as packaging, agricultural films and disposable consumer items, between 20 and 25% for long-term infrastructure such as pipes, cable coatings and structural materials, and the remainder for durable consumer applications with intermediate lifespan, such as in electronic goods, furniture, vehicles, etc. Post-consumer plastic waste generation across the European Union (EU) was 24.6 million tonnes in 2007 (PlasticsEurope 2008b). Table 1 presents a breakdown of plastics consumption in the UK during the year 2000, and contributions to waste generation (Waste Watch 2003). This confirms that packaging is the main source of waste plastics, but it is clear that other sources such as waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) and end-of-life vehicles (ELV) are becoming significant sources of waste plastics.

While in her second year at the LSR College in Delhi, Saran got her first opportunity to appear in front of the camera for a video shoot. Following her dance teacher's recommendation, she was invited to appear in the music video of Renoo Nathan's "Thirakti Kyun Hawa".[2] Shot in Banaras, the video was seen by Ramoji Films who offered her the lead role of Neha in their film Ishtam.[2] Saran accepted the part and, even before it was released she was signed to four more films,[2] including Nuvve Nuvve, in which she played a millionaire's daughter who falls for a middle-class man. In 2002, she starred in Santosham, co-starring Nagarjuna, Prabhu Deva and Gracy Singh, which was her first commercial success.[11] The film took the Nandi Award for Best Feature Film and Filmfare Best Film Award (Telugu). Saran played a woman who lets someone she loves go with another, but wins him back later in life. For her performance, she earned a nomination for the CineMAA Award for Best Actor- Female, giving her a good foothold in the Telugu industry in the early part of her career.

I’m glad that you’re doing this right now, it feels cozy and nice, especially while we’re all sheltering in place. So obviously you really love sound: you’ve made albums and have done sound for numerous films, and your new film with Veronika Kusumaryati, Expedition Content, is focused primarily on sound. Was there a point early on in your life where you realized that music and sound was something that you wanted to focus your life on? And you can think about sounds that you were drawn to when you were a child.

I remember first listening to your album with Annette Krebs, Falter 1-5, and your album on Gruenrekorder, Swiss Mountain Transport Systems. They all sound so good. It’s like something my friend once told me about Toshiya Tsunoda, about how the sounds somehow sound more crisp and “HD” than other field recordings. It almost sounds uncanny, it sounds more real than real life. When I was watching your film I kept thinking about that.

Not to harp on Leviathan but the sounds that came out of those GoPro cameras were pretty mindblowing. That’s why I wanted to stick with them. They were harsh and noisy but very detailed in their noise, it was like whoa. On a different level, looking again to these older films, Manakamana. It was recorded by Stephanie Spray with just a stereo microphone in a gondola. It was just beautifully done and it was just this pair of mic capsules in a gondola. Hearing a radio playing in a village that they’re passing over, or the birds that are down below—all this depth and detail came through in that recording.

Life for Piku (Deepika Padukone), a 20-something woman in Delhi, revolves around work and home, where she has a septuagenarian father (Amitabh Bachchan) with bowel troubles waiting for her. In writer Juhi Chaturvedi's fourth collaboration with director Sircar, an ageing parent with health issues is the source of both humour and drama in the eponymous protagonist's life. Piku addresses the challenges children in cities face as they struggle to attain a balance between their professional and personal lives. Like in the surprise hit Vicky Donor, Chaturvedi again taps into the "little idiosyncrasies" of the Bengali community. "I don't want to pin it down to them but it comes naturally to me to write about them," says Chaturvedi, a Punjabi who has grown up with Bengali neighbours. The entry of another man, Rana (Irrfan), a 30-something owner of a taxi service company, as Piku's love interest adds another dimension to the father-daughter relationship. The coupling of Khan and Padukone, for Chaturvedi, is one of the highlights of the film. "There is a natural hesitation which emerges from them not having worked with each other," she says. "It is just the right amount of familiarity which only benefits the film." As romance enters Piku's complicated life, the well-being of her father continues to be a concern even though she is often frustrated with his childish behaviour. Chaturvedi says she wanted to test the limits of parent-child relationship. "A family may be messy, chaotic and dysfunctional, but it is the only unconditional relationship you have," says Chaturvedi. "You can truly speak your mind with parents and siblings."

Speaking their hearts out is something the Mehra family struggles with in Zoya Akhtar's Dil Dhadakne Do. Much like her popular last film, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Akhtar takes her characters on a beautiful voyage-this time around the locations are Turkey and Greece-but then forces them to face life's tough questions. With Anushka Sharma and Farhan Akhtar joining the Mehras on the cruise, the film is the starriest entry of the summer pickings. 2ff7e9595c
